With a background in computer science and broad experience in space systems I am now excited by the prospect of bridging the space and ocean exploration communities. The challenges are diverse yet surprisingly similar in these two extreme environments. My previous professional and academic expertise has been focused partially on lunar exploration systems - developing a lunar lander with Moon Express and understanding the whole lunar environment with WayPaver Foundation, and partially on command, control, and analysis of sensors and instruments in extreme environments.
In the Girguis Lab I will be focused primarily on the group's unique set of analysis platforms and sensor systems such as their in situ mass spectrometer. The growth of low cost sensors, open source support, and increasing ability to understand this explosion of data makes this an incredibly exciting time to be exploring poorly understood environments such as the deep sea. Outside of the lab you can find me out on the water, reading the latest Peter Watts novel, or tinkering on my latest side project.
